Albert “Bert” George Schum, Jr.

Mr. Albert George Schum, Jr., age 70, of Glen St, Mary, Florida died Wednesday, June 10, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Bert was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and resided in Jacksonville, Florida before moving to Glen St. Mary, Florida 17 years ago. He joined the United States Navy April 1, 1969 and served as an Aviation Machinist Mate (Aircraft Mechanic) and P-3 Flight Engineer for 20 years, retiring as an ADCS (E-8).  After serving his country, he then worked for Aircraft Products Company and ultimately retired due to medical issues from DYNCORP after 20 years in various roles, with the last being Aircraft Support Equipment Specialist for VR-58. During his Navy career, he served at Naval Air Stations in Georgia, Guam and Jacksonville, Fla. He was awarded numerous awards and medals during his service in the Navy, which included his most distinguished-the Air Medal w/1 Bronze Star (notably earned for his actions as part of a crew that heroically revived a Navy aircraft that went down in an area of conflict, saving multiple lives as a result), and the Navy Achievement Medal w/ 1 Gold Star (He was most proud of this award as he was recommended for it by his subordinates for his exceptional leadership).

Bert was a loving husband, father and pawpaw. He worked harder than he played and taught his whole family that love and hard work improved your life. He loved to go metal detecting and playing in his yard with family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert G. and Joan Gilb Schum, Sr. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Karen Schum of Glen St. Mary, Florida: Two children, Michael (Rebecca) Schum of Savannah, Georgia and Crystal Burnham of Orange Park, Florida: Five siblings, Peggy (Paul) Hughes, Mark (Marlene) Schum, Kathie (Ken) Goode, Merry (Dan) Helcher, and Mike (Vicki) Schum: Five grandchildren, Samantha (Pawpaw was my best friend and taught me what it means to be truly loved), Matthew, Aaron, Aubrey and Emily.  He is also survived by 6 nieces and 3 nephews and a whole bunch of great-nieces and great-nephews.

A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Schum will be held at 11 A.M. Tuesday, June 16, in the Chapel of Guerry Funeral Home with Elder David Crawford, Pastor of the Macclenny Primitive Baptist Church, officiating. Interment with full military honors will be at 2 P.M. Tuesday, June 16, in the Jacksonville National Cemetery, Jacksonville, Florida. Visitation and gathering with the family will be from 4 to 8 P.M.
