Mr. Cecil “Pop” Sands, age 86, of Macclenny, Florida died Friday, Jan. 28, in the Douglas Center Community Hospice, Baptist Medical Center Downtown, Jacksonville, Florida following a long illness. He was born in St. George, Georgia and had resided in Macclenny, Florida for over 70 years. He worked as a custodian with the Baker County School System for over thirty years and for many years was a volunteer with the Baker County Little League Football teams. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Hall Sands and his parents, George W. and Nellie Thrift Sands. He is survived by his son, Ellis “Artie” (Deborah) Starling of Macclenny, Florida; one sister, Annie Rogers of Whitehouse, Florida; one brother, Dub Sands of Macclenny, Florida; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren also survive. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Sands will be held at 11 A.M. Tuesday, Feb. 1, in the Chapel of Guerry Funeral Home with Pastor Trevor Hersey of St. Augustine, Florida officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Baker County, Florida. Visitation and gathering with the family will be from 10 to 11 A.M.
