Irene Johns Thrift

Mrs. Irene Johns Thrift, age 99, of St. George, GA passed away Friday, December 27 in the Macclenny Nursing and Rehab Center, Macclenny, FL following an extended illness. Mrs. Thrift was born in Sanderson, FL to the late Charney and Effie Johns. She lived in Baker County for a number of years before making her home on the Thrift Farm in St. George, GA. Mrs. Thrift attended the University of Florida and Valdosta State University. After her graduation she worked in many areas of education, including driving a school bus, teaching and being a Principal. She retired with over 30 years of service to the Charlton Co. School System. After her retirement she volunteered for the Baker County School Board and worked at Thrift Ace Hardware, Macclenny, FL. Mrs. Thrift enjoyed traveling to the mountains, was a master cook and loved spending quality time with her family. She is preceded in death by her parents, her first husband and father of her children, Alfred Thrift, daughter in law, Brenda Thrift, sisters, Pauline and Agnes Johns and brothers, Claude and Clyde Johns and Lawrence Dugger. Mrs. Thrift is survived by her loving husband, Earl Parish of St. George, GA: two sons, Felton Thrift (St. George, GA) and Dr. Frederick Thrift (Barbara) of Lexington, KY: four grandchildren, Tina Bradley (Mike) of St. George, GA, Tami Brown of Jacksonville, FL, Dr. Todd Thrift (Dayla) of Gainesville, FL and Kristi Seuch (Kelly) of OK. Six great grandchildren and two great -great grandchildren also survive. A memorial service to honor the life of Mrs. Thrift will be held at 11 A.M., Saturday, January 4 in the First Assembly of God Church, Macclenny, FL with Rev. John Chesser, officiating. Visitation and gathering with the family will be from 10 to 11 A.M. (one hour before services). In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Baker County Education Foundation.
