John R. Young

Mr. John Robert Young,  age 91, of Lake City, Florida died Thursday, June 2, in the Suwanne Valley Care Center, Lake City, Florida following an extended illness.  He was born in Portsmouth, Ohio  and lived in Sunnyvale, California and Ocala, Florida before moving to Lake City, Florida 11 years ago.  He retired as a Chief Petty Officer with the U.S. Navy  in 1961 after 20 years of service.  He then worked as a dock loader and truck driver  with Beatrice Foods in California for 20 years until his retirement.  He was a member of the Watertown Congregational Methodist Church of Columbia County, Fla., a U.S. Navy veteran of W.W. II and the Korean Conflict and served in the European-African-Middle East and Pacific area and received the W.W. II Victory Medal, China Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon Bar for service on board the  USS  Makin Island during W.W. II.  He was also a member of the Teamsters Union of Sunnyvale, California and The Shrine Club of Columbus, Ohio.  He enjoyed golfing at the Country Club of Ocala,  Florida, playing cards and the guitar, watching western movies and traveling with his wife. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Clements Young and Carrie Louise Nelson Young,   step-children, Richard Monn, Monroe Gray and Martha Gray and seven siblings. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Edith Davis Young of Lake City, Florida:  Two-step sons,   Joe Gray, III of Providence, Florida and Tim (Gwen) Gray of Sanderson, Florida:  One sister, Jean Woods of Columbus, Ohio:  his granddaughter, Cynthia Crawford of Lake City, Florida and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren also survive. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Young will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday, June  4, in the Chapel of Guerry Funeral Home, Macclenny, Florida with Rev. Randy Ogburn, Pastor of Watertown Congregational Methodist Church officiating and assisted by Rev. Carl Taylor, Associate Pastor.  Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Baker County, Florida. Visitation and gathering with the family will be from 10 to 11 A.M.
