Leland J. Cobb, Jr.

Mr. Leland  J. “Duke” Cobb, Jr., age 92,  was born  May 24, 1922 and died on May 23, 2015. He was born in Detroit, Michigan and then moved to Tampa, Florida as a small child.  He was a graduate of the University of Florida with a degree in Civil Engineering.  During the summer while in college he worked for his uncle, W.L. Cobb ,  building roads.  On a stop in Ellisville, Florida he met a beautiful girl named Maurcine Witt.  They were married  on Feb. 5, 1943 and lived together  for 73 years until her  death in January of this year. Duke was drafted into the Army in W.W. II, but transferred  to the Navy. He served on a destroyer in the Pacific as a Lt. Junior grade and was a witness  to the atomic bomb that struck Hiroshema, Japan.  After the war he returned  to Tampa, Florida where was employed by the  City of Tampa, Florida. At his retirement he was the head of the city water department. He was a member of the Bethlehem  Lutheran Church and as a young man very active in  church activities.  At one time he was a lay advisor to the Bishop. After his retirement, he and Maurcine  moved back to Ellisville to care for the family farm.  He was preceded in death by his parents,  Leland Johnstone Cobb, Sr and Jessie Edith Stewart Cobb and his late wife,  Maurcine Margaret Witt Cobb.  He is survived by his son,  Leland J. (Eileen)  Cobb, III of Lake City, Fla.:  His daughter, Beverly Sue Cobb of Lake City, Fla.:  Three grandchildren,  Jennifer Paoli, Jeffrey Cobb and Christopher Cobb:  One great-granddaughter, Chloe Paoli:  One sister, Dorothy DeLise of Tampa, Florida: Two nieces, Judy Allen and Carol Latta. A remembrance  service to honor the life of Mr. Cobb will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday,  May 27, in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church  with Pastor Joy Bolanger officiating. Interment will be in Bethlehem Lutheran Church cemetery, Columbia County, Florida.  Visitation and gathering with family will be from 10 to 11 A.M.  Wednesday  (One hour before services) at the church.  In lieu of flowers , please consider donations to the Bethlehem  Lutheran  Cemetery Fund, 3339 S.W.
