Rayford "Ray" Franklin Odom was born July 10, 1927 in Waverly, GA. He was the youngest of six children born to John D. Odom and Nona Currie Odom. He was a WWII Vet serving at HQ CO 5th Army, European Theatre Operations as a cryptographer. He moved to Macclenny, Fl. in 1950, where he met and married his wife of 60 years, Joyce Jones Odom in November 1952.
He opened Odom's Department Store in 1950 which he owned and operated for 36 years. With two partners, Mr. Odom as managing partner, purchased Pineview Golf and Country Club and Pineview Chevrolet Inc. in 1980, which he owned and operated until 2009.During his lifetime he was an avid hunter, fisherman, and Florida Gator fan. He was a Gator Booster and a Bull Gator for over a decade.
Ray was a licensed real estate broker and appraiser. He was the executive director of Macclenny Housing Authority and contracting officer who built 84 units. He also served as the Chairman of the City Zoning Board for 18 years. He was a member of Dawkins Lodge #60 Free Mason of Macclenny, 32 degree Scottish Rite member, and the Moroccan Temple Shriners. He was also a member of American Legion, Macclenny Lions Club, NRA, and Florida Farm Bureau.
He is preceded in death by his two brothers John D. Odom and William "Bill" (Mary Alice) Odom and his three sisters, Katheryn (Bob) Odom Vaughn, Theresa Odom, and Gladys (Dave) Odom Davidson. Three children survive, Benjamin Sumner Odom, Allison Odom Williford, and Alicia Odom- Hinte. Mr. Odom leaves a legacy of five grandchildren: Lindsey (Joseph) Odom Vennard, Benjamin F. (Kayla) Odom, Sydney Williford, Caleb Williford, and Chase Hinte: and one great grandson, Joseph Corbin Vennard.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 A.M., Tuesday April 24, in the Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Donnie E. Williams, Sr., Pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Macclenny, Fla. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 P.M. Monday, April 23, at Guerry Funeral Home, Macclenny, Fla.
