Mr. Shelby Byrd Stephens, age 85, of Glen St. Mary, Florida died Friday, August 29, in the Baptist Medical Center Downtown, Jacksonville, Florida following a long illness. He was born in Daytona Beach, Florida and resided in Baldwin and Jacksonville, Fla. before moving to Glen St. Mary, Fla. in 1989. He retired as a chief petty officer with the U.S. Navy after 23 years of service. He then worked with Ashland Oil Company, Jacksonville, Fla. and most recently with Department of Corrections at Baker and U.C.I. facilities. He was of the Baptist faith, a Navy veteran of the Vietnam and Korean wars and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Macclenny, Fla. He also was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cornelia Ann Martin Stephens, his daughter, Marsha Ann Stephens and his sister, Dale Bagby. He is survived by three daughters, Linda Gant of Glen St. Mary, Fla., Debra Stephens of Jacksonville, Fla. and Helen (Larry) Howard of Eufaula, Alabama: Three sons, James (Alice) Stephens of Green Cove Springs, Fla., John (Lazara) Stephens of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Robert (Karen) Stephens of Glen St. Mary, Fla.: Two sister, Audrey Cottrill of Clermont, Fla. and Mary Andrews of Las Vegas, Nevada: Three brothers, James A. Stephens of Chesapeake, Va. , John Stephens of Lynchburg, Va. and Thomas Stephens of Gastonia, N. C.: Thirteen grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 A.M. Wednesday, Sept. 3, in the Chapel of Guerry Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Woods, Pastor of The Taylor Church, officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Baker County, Fla. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 A. M. Wednesday (One hour before services) at GUERRY FUNERAL HOME, U.
